A golf umbrella earns its size on the course: rain that lasts for holes, two people under one canopy, and a bag that needs keeping dry. The catch is that golf umbrella specs are quoted inconsistently, so two umbrellas both sold as "62 inch" can be quite different in the hand.
What the makers publish, side by side
| Umbrella | Size the maker gives | Wind figure on the maker's site | Other specs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weatherman Golf | 66 in arc, 56 in open | 55 mph | 41 in closed, 1.87 lb, UPF 50+ |
| totes Vented Golf Stick | 60 in vented canopy | 75 mph | UPF 50+, non-metal frame |
| GustBuster Pro Series Gold | 62 in double canopy | tested in winds up to 55 mph | fiberglass shaft |
| ShedRain Vortex Golf 62" | 62 in canopy | none given | automatic open, EVA handle |
| G4Free Double Canopy | no maker page we could match | none | none |
Arc or open width
Most golf umbrellas are sold by arc, measured over the top of the curved canopy. The open width is measured straight across and is always smaller. Weatherman gives both: a 66 inch arc and a 56 inch open width for the same umbrella. When one listing says 62 inches and another says 60, check whether both mean arc before deciding which is bigger.
What wind figures do and don't tell you
Each figure is the maker's own claim, and none of these pages describes a common test method. totes says 75 mph, GustBuster and Weatherman say 55 mph. That doesn't prove the totes is stronger; it tells you each maker stands behind a number for its own umbrella. More useful is the design behind it: a vented or double canopy lets gusts through, and a flexible fiberglass or non-metal frame bends back instead of kinking. Any umbrella can still fail in a gust at the wrong angle, and golf courses empty for lightning for good reason; don't use an umbrella in a thunderstorm.
Bag, cart and weight
A full-length golf umbrella rides in the umbrella tube of a golf bag or push cart. Weatherman's 41 inch closed length and 1.87 lb tell you what that means in practice: it's a bag and cart umbrella, not one to carry all day. If you walk the course with a carry bag, weigh that against the extra coverage.

Weatherman Golf Umbrella
Weatherman publishes a full spec table for this one: arc, open width, closed length, weight, wind figure and UPF, plus 100% recycled fabric and a lifetime warranty. That's more than any other golf umbrella here, which is why it leads.

- The 55 mph figure is Weatherman's own test; it isn't directly comparable with totes' 75 mph.
- A 56 in open width is smaller than the 66 in arc suggests.

Automatic open
ShedRain Vortex Golf 62"
A 62 inch canopy that opens with one button and has a non-slip EVA handle. ShedRain's page for this model doesn't give a wind figure or weight, so compare it on size and opening.
Budget double canopy
G4Free Double Canopy Golf Umbrella
A low-cost double-canopy golf umbrella. We couldn't match this model to a page on G4Free's site, so there are no maker specs to show; check the size and whether the listing means arc or width.
Questions people ask
What size golf umbrella is best?
Around 60 to 66 inches of arc covers two people. Check the open width too if the maker gives it: Weatherman's 66 inch arc is 56 inches straight across.
Are golf umbrellas windproof?
No umbrella is fully windproof. Vented and double canopies with flexible frames survive gusts much better, and makers publish figures from their own tests, from 55 mph (GustBuster, Weatherman) to 75 mph (totes).
Will a golf umbrella fit in my golf bag?
Full-length golf umbrellas are made for the umbrella tube of a bag or push cart. Weatherman lists 41 inches closed; check your bag's tube before buying a longer one.
Can I take a golf umbrella on a plane?
The TSA allows umbrellas through security, but a golf umbrella is usually too long for a carry-on bag. See can you bring an umbrella on a plane.
