Rules on this page were read on the official sites on 20 October 2026, except where a row says otherwise. We recheck them at least every three months, because airlines edit these pages without notice.
What security agencies say
| Where | Carry-on | Checked | What the page says | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States (TSA) | Yes | Yes | Umbrellas are allowed in carry-on bags; check your airline for size or weight limits. The officer at the checkpoint has the final say. | tsa.gov |
| Canada (CATSA) | Yes | Yes | Umbrellas are permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage. | catsa-acsta.gc.ca |
| European Union | Not banned | Not banned | The EU's common list of items banned from the cabin (Regulation 2015/1998) doesn't name umbrellas. Its "blunt instruments" are bats, clubs, batons and martial arts gear. | eur-lex.europa.eu |
| United Kingdom | Not found | Not found | The government's hand luggage page doesn't mention umbrellas either way. | gov.uk |
The EU list is a minimum. A member state or an airport can add stricter rules, and the screener decides on the day. For countries not in the table, look up the security agency of the airport you fly out of, and check again for the flight home.
Which umbrella fits in the cabin
Carry-on bags on Delta and JetBlue may not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and JetBlue caps the personal item under the seat at 17 x 13 x 8, so anything longer than 22 inches travels as an extra or in the hold.
| Umbrella type | Where it usually goes |
|---|---|
| Folding (travel) | In your carry-on or personal item. The Weatherman Travel is 11.8 in folded and the ShedRain Vortex V2 is 12 in, by their makers |
| Stick (full-length) | Too long for a bag. Carried by hand if your airline treats it as an extra, otherwise checked |
| Golf | Checked, unless your airline lets you carry it as an extra. The Weatherman Golf is 41 in closed, by Weatherman |
| Beach | Checked, sometimes as oversized baggage. See flying with a beach umbrella |
Check the closed length your umbrella's maker lists. A stick umbrella is the one to ask about before you fly: it won't go in a bag, and an airline that doesn't count it as an extra may send it to the hold.
What airlines say about umbrellas
The TSA sends you to your airline for size rules. Here is what the baggage pages of the main US airlines and one European airline say.
| Airline | What its carry-on page says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | Lists "a jacket and/or umbrella" among items free to carry on in addition to your usual carry-on items | 20.10.2026, delta.com |
| JetBlue | Names an umbrella among special items that don't count towards the carry-on limit | 20.10.2026, jetblue.com |
| United | Lists an umbrella among items you can bring for free besides your carry-on and personal item | 01.10.2026, united.com |
| easyJet | Lists an umbrella among extra things you can bring into the cabin, with an overcoat and a walking stick | 20.10.2026, easyjet.com |
| American | The carry-on page doesn't mention umbrellas | 01.10.2026, aa.com |
| Alaska | The carry-on page doesn't mention umbrellas. The contract of carriage (revised 25 August 2026) lists "coats, hats, or umbrellas" among items that don't count toward the carry-on and personal item limit | 20.10.2026, carry-on page; 27.10.2026, contract of carriage |
| Hawaiian | Hawaiian flights now come under Alaska's contract of carriage, which names Hawaiian Airlines and has the same umbrella line. Hawaiian's own carry-on page is shared with Alaska and showed no rules text when we opened it | 27.10.2026, alaskaair.com |
| Southwest | The carry-on page doesn't mention umbrellas. It allows one bag up to 24 x 16 x 10 inches plus a personal item that fits under the seat, and names neck pillows as an item that doesn't count | 27.10.2026, southwest.com |
| Frontier | Neither the bag size page nor the special items list (revised July 2026) mentions umbrellas. The personal item can be 14 x 18 x 8 inches and a carry-on 24 x 16 x 10 inches; small sporting equipment goes in the cabin only if it fits carry-on dimensions | 27.10.2026, bag sizes, special items |
United's and American's pages didn't load for us on 20 October, so those rows are from our 1 October reading. Spirit isn't in the table: it began winding down on 2 May 2026 and cancelled all flights, and spirit.com no longer opens. We couldn't read Ryanair's or British Airways' pages, so they are missing too. If your airline says nothing, a folding umbrella in your bag is the safe choice: it counts as part of your bag, not as an extra.
Pointed tips and stick umbrellas
None of the security pages above names a limit on umbrella tips or shafts. What they do say is that the officer at the checkpoint decides. If you're bringing a stick umbrella with a long metal tip, allow time at security and be ready to check it if you're asked to, or pack a folding umbrella instead.
A wet umbrella on board
Shake it out and close it before you board, then put it in a plastic bag or the umbrella's own sleeve so it doesn't drip into the bin or onto someone's coat. Open it to dry when you arrive: ShedRain's care note, for one, says to always leave an umbrella open to dry.
Umbrellas that fit in a carry-on
These are folding umbrellas whose makers publish the length or weight, so you can check them against your bag before you go.

Questions people ask
Does an umbrella count as a carry-on item?
It depends on the airline. Delta, JetBlue and United list an umbrella as an extra that doesn't count against your allowance, and so do easyJet and the contract of carriage that covers Alaska and Hawaiian flights. American's, Southwest's and Frontier's pages don't mention umbrellas, so on those airlines pack it in your bag.
Can I bring a golf umbrella on a plane?
Security allows it in the US and Canada, but a golf umbrella is far longer than a 22-inch carry-on bag (the Weatherman Golf is 41 inches closed). Check it, or ask your airline whether it will let you carry it as an extra.
Can I take an umbrella on a flight to Europe?
The EU's list of items banned from the cabin doesn't include umbrellas, and the TSA allows them on the way out. For the flight home, check the airport and airline you're leaving from. Our Europe travel umbrella guide covers which umbrella to pack.
Can I bring a beach umbrella on a plane?
Usually only as checked baggage, because it's far longer than carry-on limits. See flying with a beach umbrella.
