Patio Umbrellas for Windy Decks and Balconies

A patio umbrella is a big canopy on a stick. In a gust it acts like a sail, and an umbrella that tips or lifts can break things or hurt someone. Exposed rooftops, balconies and decks near the coast are where this happens most.

What actually keeps it steady

The table. A market umbrella passing through a table is braced at two points, which helps a lot.

The base. Heavier is steadier. Follow the umbrella maker's base recommendation; a base designed for under-table umbrellas isn't meant for a freestanding one.

A vented canopy. A vent at the top lets some air escape instead of lifting the canopy. Check whether the model you're looking at has one.

Closing it. The single most effective habit. Close and tie the umbrella when wind picks up, overnight and whenever you're away.

Cantilevers need more. An offset canopy on a side pole puts far more leverage on the base. On windy sites, use the full base the maker specifies, or choose a market umbrella instead.

The picks

Abba Patio market umbrella with crank

Through-the-table umbrella

Abba Patio Lyon 9 ft Patio Umbrella

Abba Patio lists a crank, push-button tilt, a screw-in pole and sizing for 42 to 54 inch tables. Through a table, on a proper base, it's the steadier setup for a breezy patio.

Know before you buy

  • Made for a table: Abba Patio sizes it for 42 to 54 in tables, so it's a lot of canopy for a small bistro set.
  • It needs a base or table hole to stand; plan the base when you order.

Maker's specs

  • 9 ft canopy
  • Push-button tilt and crank
  • Sized for 42 to 54 in tables with 4 to 6 chairs
  • Screw-in pole

Questions people ask

What patio umbrella won't blow over?

Any umbrella can blow over in enough wind. A market umbrella through a table on a heavy base, closed when wind rises, is the safest setup.

How heavy should the base be?

Use the umbrella maker's recommendation for your model first. As a guide, two umbrella makers put a 9 ft table umbrella at 50 lb or more, and a cantilever at hundreds of pounds; our patio umbrella base guide has both charts.

Should I close my patio umbrella at night?

Yes, and whenever you're not using it.
