Matching the umbrella to the region
Britain and Ireland. Rain is frequent and often comes with wind, especially on coasts and high ground. Pack a sturdy compact rather than a mini.
The Low Countries and northern France. Flat, open cities with few wind breaks. A compact with a strong frame handles most days; bring it rather than relying on a cheap street-stall umbrella.
