Round umbrellas are made for round tables in the middle of a patio. Plenty of outdoor spaces aren't shaped like that: balconies are narrow, seating sits against a wall, and dining tables are long. Flat and half-round canopies fit those spaces better.
Which shape
Half-round. One flat side goes against a wall, railing or window. Good for balconies and bistro seating by the house.
Rectangular. Shades a long table or a row of loungers without a huge round canopy.
Small balcony umbrellas. Compact rectangular canopies on bases or clamps for narrow spaces.
Round market. Still the choice for a round table in the open. See our patio umbrella picks.

What to check before buying
- Space. Measure the wall length or balcony depth, and the height to any overhang.
- Base or mount. Half-round and balcony umbrellas often need their own base or clamp. Check what's included; a half-round umbrella needs a flat-backed base like the US Weight Half Round.
- Wind. Balconies and rooftops can be windy. Close the umbrella when wind picks up.
- Lights. Solar lights are a nice extra; check how they charge and switch on.
Questions people ask
What is a half-round patio umbrella?
An umbrella with one flat side that sits against a wall, giving shade on one side only.
Are flat umbrellas better in wind?
Shape alone doesn't make an umbrella wind-safe. Base, mounting and closing it when wind rises matter more. See patio umbrellas for wind.
Can I use one on an apartment balcony?
Check your building's rules and how the umbrella is secured before setting one up.
