The base is the part of a patio setup most likely to be undersized. The umbrella arrives, the base bought alongside it turns out to be too light, and the first breezy afternoon tips the whole thing into the table. Getting the weight right takes a minute with the numbers below.
How heavy the base should be
There isn't one industry chart. Two umbrella makers publish their own, and they don't fully agree, so here are both side by side. Where they differ, go with the heavier figure.

Purple Leaf calls its numbers guidelines for normal conditions and says a windy site or a cantilever needs more. Midtown's figures are written for its own umbrellas. Neither guide replaces the base your umbrella's maker specifies, so check that first.
Table or free-standing
Through a table. The table braces the pole, so the base mostly keeps it upright. US Weight's 30 and 50 lb bases are made for this.
Free-standing. Nothing braces the pole, so the base carries all of it. Use a base sold for free-standing use, and size up.
Pole width. Measure your pole before you buy. US Weight's lighter bases take 1.3 to 1.75 inch poles, the heavier ones 1.5 to 2 inches, and Midtown's Core takes standard 1.5 inch poles. A pole that rattles in the stem wobbles no matter what the base weighs.
Filled or pre-filled. Pre-filled concrete bases arrive at their full weight. Fillable ones ship light and depend on what you put in them; US Weight lists concrete, sand, gravel or water for its fillable bases.

Questions people ask
How heavy should a base be for a 9 ft umbrella?
Both maker guides we checked put a 9 ft umbrella at 50 lb or more. Purple Leaf calls that a guideline for normal conditions; for a free-standing or exposed umbrella, go heavier.
Is a heavier base always better?
For stability, yes, as long as it fits your pole and you can move it. A base that's too heavy to shift ends up being left in the wrong spot, which is why bases with wheels are worth it above 50 lb.
Can I add weight to a base I already have?
Some bases are built for it. Midtown's Core takes up to two 20 lb stackers. For a fillable base, the fill you choose decides the final weight.
Does a cantilever umbrella need a heavier base?
Much heavier. Purple Leaf's guide calls for at least 280 lb for a 9 to 11 ft cantilever, and Midtown's size guide lists a 400 lb fillable base or an anchor for its 9 x 9 and 10 x 10 ft cantilevers.
Should I close the umbrella even with a heavy base?
