Too small, and half the table sits in the sun by mid-afternoon. Too big, and the canopy hits the house, the railing or people's heads. Sizing a patio umbrella takes a tape measure and two numbers.
The overhang rule
Purple Leaf's size guide puts it simply: the umbrella should extend at least 2 feet past the table on every side. For a round table, that means an umbrella at least 4 feet wider than the table. For a square table, 2 feet past each side, so an 8 x 8 ft umbrella suits a 4 x 4 ft table. For a rectangle, 2 feet past the long sides, so a 6 x 4 ft table works with a 10 x 8 ft umbrella.
The sun moves, so more overhang keeps the table shaded for longer; with less, the shade slides off the table sooner.
Size chart by table
Midtown Umbrellas publishes the largest table it pairs with each of its umbrella sizes, plus the base it wants. Its size guide says:
| Umbrella | Round table up to | Square or rectangular table up to | Base Midtown lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft | 30 in | 3 ft | at least 35 lb |
| 8 ft | 48 in | 5 ft | at least 50 lb |
| 9 ft | 54 in | 7 ft | at least 50 lb |
| 10 ft | 62 in | 8 ft | at least 75 lb |
| 9 x 9 ft square | 70 in | 9 ft | 400 lb fillable or an anchor |
| 10 x 10 ft square | 80 in | 10 ft | 400 lb fillable or an anchor |
Other makers size their own umbrellas the same way. Abba Patio sizes its Lyon 9 ft for 42 to 54 inch tables with four to six chairs, and its 10 ft Maza cantilever for 60 to 84 inch tables. Read the maker's own sizing for the umbrella you're looking at; it's the most specific number you'll get. For base weights by size, see our patio umbrella base guide.
Arc or diameter
Umbrella sizes are quoted two ways. The open diameter is the width from edge to edge, measured straight across. The arc is measured over the top of the curved canopy, so it's always the bigger number. Weatherman's golf umbrella, for example, lists a 66 inch arc and a 56 inch open diameter. For shading a table, the open width is the number that matters; if a listing gives only one figure, check which it is.
Height and clearance
Purple Leaf suggests about 7 feet or more from the ground to the underside of the canopy, so people can stand up from the table without catching the edge. Tilt the canopy for low evening sun rather than buying a bigger umbrella. Leave room for chairs to pull out without hitting the pole or the base.
Free-standing and odd spaces
Without a table, measure the area you want shaded and add the same 2 feet. Over loungers or a pool edge, a cantilever keeps the pole out of the way; see cantilever umbrellas. On a narrow balcony or against a wall, a half-round or rectangular umbrella fits better than a bigger round one.

Questions people ask
What size umbrella do I need for a 60 inch table?
At least 9 ft by the 2 foot overhang rule, and 10 ft by Midtown's chart, which stops its 9 ft umbrella at 54 inch tables. When the two disagree, the bigger umbrella keeps the table shaded longer.
What size umbrella for a 48 inch round table?
An 8 ft umbrella is the minimum by both the chart and the overhang rule; a 9 ft one gives more shade as the sun moves.
How do I measure my current patio umbrella?
Open it and measure straight across from one rib tip to the opposite one. That's the open diameter. If you're replacing only the canopy, see how to measure for a replacement canopy.
Does a bigger umbrella need a heavier base?
Yes. Midtown lists at least 50 lb for 9 ft and 75 lb for 10 ft, and square cantilevers need far more. Our base guide compares two makers' numbers.
