A faded or torn canopy on a sound frame is worth replacing. Canopies cost a fraction of a new umbrella, and they're the part the sun wears out first. The trouble is that "9 ft" on a listing tells you less than you'd think about whether it will fit your frame.
Step 1: count the ribs
Open the umbrella partway and count the ribs from the top. Six and eight are the common counts. The rib count has to match exactly, because each rib tip sits in its own pocket at the canopy's edge. A canopy cut for eight ribs has pockets in the wrong places on a six-rib frame, even at the same size.
Step 2: measure one rib
Measure along one rib, from the hub at the top of the pole to the tip at the outer end. Measure the rib itself, not the old fabric, which stretches and shrinks with age.
This number is how universal canopies are sold. Formosa Covers, for instance, cuts its 9 ft canopies for ribs between 52 and 54 inches. Roughly speaking, rib length is half the umbrella's width, so 54 inch ribs belong to a 9 ft (108 inch) umbrella.
Step 3: check the frame type
Market umbrella. A center pole, often through a table. Universal replacement canopies like Formosa's are made for these.
Cantilever or offset. The canopy hangs from an arm off a side pole. Formosa says its market canopies don't fit these; look for a canopy from your umbrella's maker.
Vent and top. Note whether your umbrella has a vent at the top and how the canopy fixes at the top of the pole, and compare that with the listing's photos and description.
Step 4: try the maker first
Umbrella makers design canopies around their own frames. Abba Patio lists replacement canopies made for specific models, like the Lyon 9 ft, Lyon 11 ft and Vienna 10 ft cantilever, and on its Lyon 11 ft and Vienna canopies it asks you to verify your umbrella model before ordering. Midtown Umbrellas sells spare canopies for its umbrellas with twistable tops. If your umbrella has a label or a model number on the pole or the canopy, start there.

When a new umbrella makes more sense
Replace the whole umbrella if ribs are bent or snapped, the hub at the top is cracked, or the crank and tilt no longer hold. A new canopy on a failing frame tears at the same weak points. How do I know what size canopy to buy?
Count the ribs and measure one rib from hub to tip. Match both to the listing: the rib count exactly, and the rib length inside the range the canopy's maker states.
Can I put an 8-rib canopy on a 6-rib umbrella?
No. The pockets for the rib tips won't line up, so the canopy won't sit or tension properly.
